Running continuously since 1989, the Aviemore Classic started as a single-day Sunday race with an iconic mass start across all divisions—a breathtaking sight that still stuns spectators today.
Over the years, the regatta has grown into a full three-day festival (Friday through Sunday) hosting National and South Island Championships alongside the core Aviemore Classic. It’s the ultimate mix of fierce, high-level racing on the water and a famously social, relaxed atmosphere on land.

​Not looking for high-stakes competition? Held roughly around lunchtime on Saturday, the Swanny Fun Race is designed for sailors who love being on the water without the pressure. Navigating down the river into Lake Aviemore, this popular race features a different fun theme each year to get the kids and families involved!
The Heart of the Regatta: Tent City
Tent City is our social hub where sailors gather to share stories, catch up, and recharge.
  • On-Site Comforts: Hot showers, cooking areas, and marquee facilities.
  • Community Dinners: Enjoy hot meals, cold drinks, Friday night BBQ, and Saturday night Spit Roast.
  • Sailing for a Cause: Dinner proceeds raise vital funds for local Emergency Response Teams and the Coastguard, whose support keeps us safe on the water.
